Dove Hunting

Volume dove in our Lodge is unique in the world, so if you haven’t experienced it yet you should not put it off any longer. This is the place where doves fly all day over the sunflower, wheat or sorghum plantations. Experienced hunters may easily expect to shoot 1000 rounds a day!… So much so that most hunters use regularly 2 guns and a reloader to prevent barrel overheating.

The province of Cordoba, located in the heart of Argentina, offers not only the best atmosphere and ideal location around the world to hunt pigeons and doves, of which there are millions but also one of the Top destinations for Wingshooting. This is an area full of hills and rivers, surrounded by land agriculture. These features are the facts that contribute to the immense population of birds, estimated in more than 20,000,000 (Twenty million).
The hunting for eared doves in this area is excellent twelve months a year, and in certain months – February through July – outings can include field and decoy shooting for pigeon, either in combination with the doves or as a dedicated shoot.

You’re met on arrival by an English speaking Host and assisted through customs. You’ll transfer to The Lodge, perhaps arriving in time to shoot in the afternoon. Here you’ll enjoy the true flavor of Argentine life and their warm hospitality. Our Lodge have comfortable dining and lounging areas, fireplaces; as well as friendly staff to meet your every need. Bedrooms are double occupancy and baths are adjoining. The cuisine is excellent and varied; including famed Argentine beef and wines, chicken, lamb, pork, fish, game, fruits, salads and pastas. An “asado” is a special treat!

Early morning, after a full breakfast, we drive (5 to 30 min.) to the field where the guides will have the blinds set and cases of shells ready. About half hour after light breaks, clouds of dove will start swarming over the hunters. There is no way to describe it; you must see to believe it.

Doves are done nearly all day long beginning early in the mornings and stopping for lunch at midday (lunch can be served in the field if requested). Generally, the doves fly from the woods into the plantations for feeding, but they can come basically from any direction. Hunters are placed every 100 yards and everybody goes with a guide/helper for spotting the birds and to pick them up. Hunting can be complemented with partridge (if in season) and vizcachas (an interesting mammal resembling a big rabbit that lives in communal tunnels and are nocturnal).Affordable Luxury Hunting Lodge and Cordoba High Volume Dove Shooting

Dove Biology – Physical Description: the mourning dove is a member of the family of birds called Columbidae. Male and female mourning doves look very similar with pale buff-brown head, neck, breast, and belly. Purple and green iridescence on neck. Small black mark on lower neck. Medium brown back and upperwings, with large black spots on coverts. Long tail is pointed at tip. Dark brown tail with white tips to outer four tail feathers, which show during flight. Juveniles can be distinguished from adults by light buffing on the tips of the primary feathers which persist until the first molt. Dark brown mottled head neck and breast. Scaly neck and upperwings with numerous black spots on coverts and scapulars. Pale belly. Medium length tail is pointed at tip. Young are indistinguishable from adults by the age of 3 months. Long pointed tail is distinctive for adults, while black spotting on coverts and pale color help distinguish it from White-winged and White-tipped Doves. Juvenile is easily confused with Common Ground-Dove and Inca Dove, but is longer necked, shows a pointed tail with more white at edges and lacks cinnamon in primaries. Length: 10.5 inches.

The primary dove shot in Cordoba is the Zenaida Auriculata (the golden eared dove). In Argentina, It is com monly referred to as the Paloma. There are several differences between our Mourning Dove and the Golden Eared Dove, with the greatest difference being that the Golden Eared Dove does not migrate. Migration is not necessary because the climate in the Corboda area is perfect for year round agriculture. This climate along with abundant food source has caused their natural instinct to migrate to evolve to the point the rarely travel more than a few miles from where they hatched.

Another huge difference between our dove and the Argentinean dove is the number of times the doves reproduce. Our Mourning Dove typically reproduces once per year, having 1-2 eggs per nest. The Golden Eared Dove reproduces 5-6 times per year laying 3-5 eggs per nest. This aggressive reproduction and lack of migration causes big problems to the farmers in the Cordoba area, but gives hunters the opportunity to have the best Dove Hunting in the world.

Each year farmers lose up to 40% of the crops because of the Dove, so farmers welcome the hunters. Dove Hunting in Argentina has no season and there are really no bad months to hunt. Additionally in the high volume hunting environment in Cordoba there are no daily limits. It is not uncommon for a hunter to shoot 1000 or more birds each day.
Foods: Ninety-nine percent of the mourning dove diet is comprised of weed seeds and grains. Preferred weed seeds include pigweed, foxtails, wild sunflower, and ragweed. Preferred grains include corn, sorghum and millet. Insects make up a very small proportion of the dove diet. Doves move an average of 2-8 miles for food.

Effects of hunting: Continent-wide hunting mortality is estimated at 10-15% of the fall population annually. This mortality is believed to be below the level which would significantly decrease long-term dove abundance or hinder expansion of geographic area.

Mainly pulled dove, which is declared as a pest in several regions of the country and therefore there is no limit on quantity or hunting season.

Mortality: The natural mortality rate for mourning doves is high; approximately 6 out of 10 birds do not survive from one year to the next. Research indicates that mourning dove mortality is caused by a variety of factors including predators, disease, accidents, hunting and weather extremes.
